Key DPG messages/Priorities

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) ill-health burden continues to be a challenge in Uganda with persistently high teenage pregnancy of 25%, HIV infection especially among young people (10-14 years) contributing to 41% of new infections and high maternal mortality of 336/100,000 live births, 23% unmet family planning needs; to mention but a few. Despite the existing scientific evidence, there is still some resistance among sections of the public towards access to SRHR information and services especially by adolescents that are most in need. Addressing the SRHR challenge requires a holistic and human rights based approach with a multi-dimensional and multi-sectoral engagement with due consideration to socio-economic determinants of health.

It is therefore imperative that development partners supporting different aspects like health, education, gender equality and human rights should come together to ensure a concerted, coordinated and harmonised approach in supporting the Government of Uganda to reduce morbidity and mortality related to the SRHR burden of disease. Moreover, the impact of speaking with one voice in advancing evidence-based advocacy and in holding duty-bearers accountable for SRH information and services can never be underrated. To this end, the Inter-Development Partners’ Working Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (IDPWG-SRHR) was formed

Objectives

The purpose of the IDPWG-SRHR is to provide a platform for:

  1. Discussion and coordination on SRHR issues across the relevant sectors / working groups and agreeing on multi-sectoral approaches/strategies to advance SRHR in Uganda.
  2. Supporting evidence generation to advance SRHR in the country using a multi-dimensional/multi-sectoral approach.
  3. Harmonizing members programs and activities around SRHR from different sectors (health, education, gender, human rights, etc.)
  4. Supporting the process of mainstreaming SRHR into government sectors, department and agencies.
  5. Supporting joint advocacy/policy dialogue initiatives to advance the SRHR agenda, taking into account holistic dimension of SRHR. This will be done at different technical and political levels; and with various stakeholders including cultural and religious leaders/institutions, and civil society.
  6. Tracking the progress made in advancing the SRHR agenda in the Country, according to internationally accepted obligations, guidelines and standards. This includes taking stock of policies and frameworks regarding SRHR and provide follow-up and support (accountability).
  7. Holding duty-bearers, especially political and technical leaders, accountable for the commitments, and roles and responsibilities with regard to SRHR.
